Why awareness is key to a mindset shift

One of my first lessons in mindset was an easy and quick read from Florence Scovel Shinn, "The Game of Life and How to Play it." It wasn't until I finished the book that I learned it was first published in 1925. I was floored that (1) metaphysical teachings weren't a new idea, and (2) what she wrote nearly 100 years ago still reigns true today.
I used it to develop my Level Up classes based on the idea that life is a game, and when you know how to play it, you can overcome challenges, download upgrades or cheat codes, and ultimately master the game. Here's the first lesson I always teach in my Level Up mindset classes.
The founding principle to a mindset shift is AWARENESS. There are four significant elements of awareness that you'll need to understand.
You are always creating in the NOW moment, and what you do now will shape your present and future.
Remind yourself often that you are consciously creating a mindset shift. Writing it down or saying it out loud helps anchor the idea and reinforces it in our subconscious.
Activities like meditation, yoga, exercise, learning a new task, or using your less dominant hand (aka neurogenesis) are proven to create new neurons and connections in the brain. These connections keep your brain sharp and agile and ready for expansion.
The power to change your mindset and accomplish your goals is entirely up to you. You hold all the power. Your awareness of this fact can unlock the golden gates to your dreams.
Just like you can't wake up one day and decide to run a marathon for the first time, you can't decide you're creating a mindset shift just by saying it; you have to do the work to make it stick. You'll want to revisit this list daily until it becomes a well-seasoned idea accepted by your subconscious.
Awareness takes repetition and requires you to remain focused in stressful moments. Mastering awareness is learning to find your breath, find your center, and use that power to anchor in stillness.
Here's my trick for finding calmness amid a storm:
Fire off at least ten things that you genuinely love as quickly as possible without thinking.
Now look around the room and notice three objects in your physical space, really notice them in a way you've never before.
Take a deep breath, pull your abdominal muscles toward your spine, and pretend you're blowing out birthday candles. Repeat this once or twice more.
After the last breath, let out a deep and low "om" hum or sigh that you can feel through your heart and abdominals, repeat once more.
Now, take notice of your physical, mental, and emotional state? You should find that your mind is clear. You'll find that your mind is void of thought, your body is relaxed, and you're in an instant meditative state.
Here's why this technique works. You're raising your vibrational frequency by stating things you love and doing it quickly, keeping your mind (better your ego) from butting in. Peace and calm are high-vibrational states and can't be obtained with low-vibe energy. Next, by noticing three things in your physical space, you are bringing your awareness into the now and present moment, and finally, two deep cleansing breaths help move any stagnant energy trapped in your mind and body.
When you're in a calm state, you're aligned with divine energy, and now your thoughts are more like guidance, your actions have well-laid plans, and you are non-resistant to appearances that may initially seem unfavorable. THat's the awareness that's key to a powerful and lasting mindset shift.
